Sophie Brenneman

Sophie’s work renders a sense of place that is as real as it is imagined, distilled from the impressions left on her by the spaces she once moved through, and by the people and objects she shared those places with. Blending the tangible with the ethereal, the recognizable with the surreal, her drawings become a (literal) paper trail; physically holding a place in time for the moments, faces, states, and places that were something she once called home.

She earned her BFA in Drawing & Painting from The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS, and her MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA. She is a professor of visual art at Penn State University’s Altoona College, and lives in State College, Pennsylvania.
